Overview

In previous activity (attached), I summarized health information technology (HIT) areas of concern from the Villa Health Informatics Infrastructure scenario. This assignment, I need to select and examine a HIT device or system designed to both improve the quality of patient care and confer cost efficiencies or savings within a clinical setting.

Preparation

Choose and research a widely adopted HIT device or system designed to improve the quality of patient care while conferring cost efficiencies or savings within a clinical setting. Some examples include but are not limited to:

  • Electronic medical records (EMRs).
  • Imaging systems.
  • Emergency room technology.
  • Robotic surgery.
  • Telemedicine.

Note: Choose a generic solution type, not a specific one made by a particular manufacturer.

Instructions

Conduct a rigorous evaluation of the HIT solution that you have selected in which you:

  • Briefly describe the solution and summarize why it has been widely adopted.
  • Evaluate a significant improvement to patient care that this HIT claims to confer that considers the most prominent arguments for its adoption. Provide a specific example to illustrate.
  • Compare the cost savings or efficiencies of deploying the solution versus a commonly used alternative(s) that would effectively inform a decision to adopt it or not.
    • The reason multiple alternatives might need to be considered is that some alternatives may require more than one system or "solution" to achieve similar results to the system that you have identified.
  • Describe the resources that are required to implement, maintain, and run your chosen HIT in sufficient detail to inform a decision to adopt it.
  • Describe the common barriers to adopting this technology. Select one and share a way(s) that providers have effectively overcome that barrier.

Use at least five sources to support your writing. Choose sources that are credible, relevant, and appropriate.

Healthcare Technology or Informatics Issues

Issues facing Valley City Regional Hospital

Valley City Regional Hospital faces various healthcare technology and informatics

issues. First, the hospital does not possess one system. They have two systems: the

financial system and the administrative system. This was not a significant issue when

Valley City was a small hospital, but now that it is part of Vila Health, there are different

expectations. Another area for improvement facing the hospital is outdated systems.

The radiology and lab have the oldest technology, a huge problem. Everyone using the

two systems functions effectively, and they get the job done. Besides, these people

have worked in hospitals for a while and are conversant with the two systems. Thus,

they are less likely to want to learn something new. Furthermore, there needs to be

more technical support as the vendors for the two systems went out of business. Lastly,

those systems are meaningful use certified; moreover, they need to meet

interoperability requirements.

The other issues facing the hospital are HIPPA and security issues. This area was a

minor concern in a small setting, but as part of a larger entity like Vila Health, Valley City

might have a huge problem. HIPPA and security issues may include disclosure of

private health information. Although the hospitals provide training regarding not

discussing work outside the hospital, other aspects of HIPPA pose a challenge.

Issues Facing Delaware County Hospital

Delamare County Hospital's primary issue is the need for an evaluation strategy. Based

on the information provided, the hospital has been striving to improve quality, reduce

costs, and strengthen the overall patient experience. But they cannot measure these

3

elements. While the hospital has made tremendous progress, determining what

constitutes success can only decide how well the systems support strategic goals.
